2/8/08

Hi Everyone,

My dad called in the morning at about 6:30am and told my mom amd I that he was at 15,000 feet and he and his team were going to try and reach the sumit of Mt. Kilimanjaro tomorrow. He is very excited. He sounded well, but could only talk for a few minutes. My dad arrives home on Tuesday. If he calls again, I will post what he says. Hopefully he reaches the top! We're all routing for him! :)

364700Having summited last June I took the exact same route with Thomson and have been reliving my experience everyday nowing exactly where he is. We also summited a day early and as I mentioned in a post earlier to him, he is in for the hardest yet most exilerating experience. Should they summit tomorrow it will be over 9 hours to the top and 4 1/2 back down. He will cherish the emotions he is going to experience for the rest of his life and I wish him all the luck to make it to the top. He will be one of the few who can say he stood and was able to look down across the heavens. He should be standing at the top about 7am est or so.

Hi Randy

thanks for the response and nice to hear from you again! You were right, it was quite an experience. Going up was not so much of a problem. Coming down however was a whole different experience. After we reached the summit we went down about 500-600 feet to the Crater Camp where we stayed the night at 18,800 and 10 dgree weather (that night) the Glaciers that we could see from our tents were truly beautiful. The next morning we climbed 200 ft in the snow - and then we spent about 7 hrs going from 19,000 ft to 10,000 ft. Had a descent sleep - and a few Kilimanjaro beers and the next day hiked down another 2200 ft out thru the forrest. My legs have not been this sore since my 20's!!!!!!!
